Parent Carers Together’s Response to “Solving the SEND Crisis” Report

The House of Commons Education Committee published a report in September “Solving the SEND Crisis”.

We, Parent Carers Together, the official parent carer forum for Bournemouth, Christchurch, and Poole and have written a response to the “Solving the SEND Crisis” report, highlighting the urgent need for systemic reform and call for a more inclusive, transparent, and family-centred approach to SEND provision.

The SEND system is broken – but change is possible. To make sure these changes really work for families, parents need to be at the centre.

Your voice matters — and when we speak collectively, we are heard. Being a member of PCT gives you the opportunity to share your experiences, influence decision-making, and help shape the future of SEND services in BCP. Together, we can build a system that works for families, not against them.

Short Breaks

In May, we ran a series of Parent Panels to gather parental views on the BCP Short Breaks service.  We put this feedback along with feedback gathered from a previous event and produced a report which we sent to BCP Council.
We have since had a couple of meetings with BCP SEND Commissioners about our next steps.

Transitions

In 2022 the Learning Disability and Autism Programme NHS England, funded the Southwest region of Parent Carer Forums to undertake a project to understand the transition experiences of children and young people with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND). (See Appendix b) The project collected experiences of 225 individual parent carers across the Southwest and the collective feedback from the parent carer forums across the region. The research found variability within the experiences and identified 5 key themes which impacted on the transition process.
