Two new SEND consultations: why they matter

We know many parent carers are experiencing consultation fatigue. There have been numerous SEND surveys, reviews and reform proposals over recent years.
However, two new Department for Education consultations launched today could influence the future of SEND support:

Education Other Than at School (EOTAS) and education outside mainstream settings
How support and oversight could be strengthened for children and young people educated outside of school and other education settings. https://consult.education.gov.uk/accountability-and-special-schools/send-reform-education-other-than-at-school/

SEND Funding and the High Needs Threshold

How mainstream schools could receive more SEND funding upfront to support children earlier and reduce reliance on top-up funding. The DfE is proposing that local authorities could choose to introduce this approach from 2027/28 ahead of wider reforms planned for 2029/30. https://consult.education.gov.uk/funding-policy-unit/upfront-funding-for-mainstream-schools-creating-a/

Both consultations are opened on 10th July and will close on 18th September at 11:59pm

Would you like to develop your understanding of Autism and Neurodiversity and how it may present in children and young people?

This free half-day session provides parents and carers with a basic introduction to Autism and Neurodiversity, including:

💙 A young person's perspective: My Experiences
💙 An opportunity to build your knowledge and confidence in supporting your child

The session is free and open to families living in the BCP area. Your child does not need to have an autism diagnosis for you to attend.

📵Mobile phones in schools📵

The government guidance became statutory on 29th June 2026 with schools required to follow it from 1st September 2026.

Although schools should be mobile phone-free environments by default, the guidance makes clear that schools must comply with their legal duties toward disabled pupils explaining there may be cases where a disabled pupil having access to a mobile phone in school is considered a reasonable adjustment. Likewise, pupils might need to use a phone to manage medical needs in school.
